From Laughs to Scripts: Lucent Studios' Creative Evolution

Updated: Apr 2

From musicals to full studio albums, Lucent Studios features products we're proud of. But how did it start?

We really should have seen it coming. The Scarlet Pimpernel, Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, Cyrano de Bergerac, King Lear, Crazy for You, The Drowsy Chaperone didn't seem life-changing at the time. (Okay, maybe some of them did. Let's be honest.) But mostly we grew up appreciating theater without any plan to pursue playwrighting or composition as careers.

Many years later, what started out as a summer project turned into a lifetime commitment. We began work on our first musical and couldn't stop. Now, just as we appreciated the beautiful, moving plays we appreciated then (and still do today), we love a well-told story and a well-sung song.

How did you come up with ideas for plays and music?

A - We talked over options. I generally choose a story I've laughed over or fallen in love with.

Q - I stared at the squiggles until the notes made sense and my eyeballs nearly fell out. Beards like this don't come without serious focus.

What has been most helpful to you as a writer and producer?

A - My formal education has helped hugely. Studying English and professional writing honed my narrative skills. I'm also a huge advocate for writing workshops and small skills experiences.

Q - We went to a lot of plays growing up and listened to a lot of music. It has been a huge part of my life, from Celtic Night on NPR with Fiona Ritchie to Owl City in concert.

What's one of your favorite plays you've attended as a patron?

A - Local theater performances are my favorite. I love watching family, friends, and neighbors onstage. Recent performances have included a monologue on the life of Buckminster Fuller and White Christmas.

Q - If it fits, I sits.
